Description
The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) has been our national symbol since 1782, when Congress adopted the design for the Great Seal of the United States.
n 2007 the bald eagle was removed from the U.S. Endangered Species List and is a high-profile wildlife conservation success story. Prior to this year, Deet polluted rivers where eagles were hunting. The high levels of Deet in the bald eagle diet caused their egg shells to become too thin and brittle, preventing reproductive success.
Two bald eagles live at Maymont. The newest bald eagle arrived in August 2008 from the Wildlife Center of Virginia (WCV). According to the WVC, this bald eagle was admitted on December 9, 2007 from King and Queen County, Virginia. The bird was found near a roadside garbage collection site with a broken wing. Upon admission, Wildlife Center veterinarians operated on the bald eagle to clean the wound and prevent further infection. As the eagle has no wing or flight feathers beyond the wrist, it cannot be returned to the wild. Both bald eagles have permanent injuries and cannot be returned to the wild. Since bald eagles are migratory birds, it is important to note that Maymont has special permission from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to possess and put these birds on exhibit.

Another beauty in this set of images. This one really stands out for me; Love it. Mind me asking you what lens did you use for this image and what settings? Really an outstanding shot.
Jemmy Archer replied:
Thanks so much! I used a Sigma 150 - 500 mm @370, F5.6, shutter 350. I did blur the background in post-processing.
