Description
Stellers Jay in Winter
A Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri ) kept us company while we warmed ourselves before hiking the scenic trail in Maroon Bells - Snowmass Wilderness area in the White River National Forest, Colorado. The snow on his bill was adorable!
The Steller's Jay is a large, dark jay of evergreen forests in the mountainous West. They are large songbirds with large heads, chunky bodies, rounded wings, and a long, full tail. The bill is long, straight, and powerful, with a slight hook. Steller's Jays have a prominent triangular crest that often stands nearly straight up from their head.
